This partial data has been compiled by Chinese Human Rights Defenders (CHRD) as a project launched in March 2013. It is based on information collected from reports by human rights organizations working in mainland China. The data focus on the period from January 1, 2012 onward. The documentation includes 2,761 cases of human rights defenders who, during the period, are known/believed to have been deprived of liberty for at least five (5) days, and those known to have been tortured or inhumanely treated in retaliation for their rights advocacy work, regardless of length of detention.

The first table documents 704 cases from January 1 – December 31, 2015. The second table documents 968 cases from January 1 – December 31, 2014. The third table lists information from January 1, 2012 – December 31, 2013, a period in which 1,089 cases were documented (564 cases from 2013 & 525 cases from 2012). [*Note: The third table also includes an additional 87 cases from before 2012 that are not included in the total figure of arbitrary detentions from 2012 to present].

Cases are listed in descending chronological order of date of initial detention, with the most recent cases first.
